Meetings
SCARS meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month at Fire Station #7 near Westheimer Airport / Field. This is just west of the traffic light at Rock Creek Road and Highway 77. The club meetings starts at 9:30 AM but come a few minutes early for coffee and donuts. Don't forget to bring a dollar or two to cover for the donuts. If you are a new ham, an old ham, or just interested in getting involved in ham radio, don't hesitate to come to the meeting. Guests are always welcome!
The SCARS Executive Board meets every 4th Saturday of the month at 9:00 AM at the McDonald's located on West Lindsey Avenue (near the intersection of Lindsey and McGee). Any and all members are encouraged to attend to discuss what the executives are discussing for the activities and events of the club. This meeting is subject to cancellation with little or no notice and will be relayed via the SCARS email list.
SCARS operates one VHF repeater for the city of Norman / Cleveland County, Oklahoma area. The W5NOR repeater operates on 147.060 (PL Tone -141.3 or +100.0). SCARS also operates one UHF repeater on 443.700 (+ offset, PL 141.3). On Tuesday nights at 8:00 PM (central time zone), SCARS has an ARES net on 147.060 to assist in preparedness for emergencies. During times of severe weather threats, the Cleveland County SkyWarn also utilizes the VHF repeaters to communicate with the National Weather Service and city of Norman emergency services in a hope to advance the warning to the city of Norman and surrounding communities. SCARS also sponsors a digipeater (144.390 MHz) as of April 2007 at the request of Norman Johnson (N0ELS) on the same location as the VHF and UHF repeaters.
During times of severe weather or other community related emergencies, the Norman Emergency Operations Center is located in the same building where SCARS meets for monthly meetings. SCARS is always working close with the city of Norman Emergency Operations Coordinator with communications during this time. Oh, and the coordinator is a ham too!
SCARS hosts the N5HZX Memorial Net (In memory of Fred Goodwin, N5HZX) every Wednesday evening at 8:00 PM (central time zone) on 28.445 USB. Everybody is encouraged to join this ragchew net. Depending on propagation, occasionally some DX stations check-in. The 10 meter net was chosen in that it is suitable for local, close-in contacts and allows some Technician licensees to get their feet wet on HF. Old or new, everybody with a Technician license or higher is encouraged to check-in!
SCARS has a 10-10 Number issued to the club call W5NOR. We are #73500 in 10-10 International, which was created years ago to help promote activity on 10 meters when the solar cycle drops off.
We encourage you to sign up for announcements from the club for a better way of communication. Emails are only sent out for emergencies or quick updates and are not intended for daily emails to fill-up your email accounts. You can sign up for these email updates by sending an email to scars.email@gmail.com. You must email from the email address you are signing up for the announcements to scars.email@gmail.com. This will greatly reduce the number of wrong email addresses being added by the webmaster.
